Reaching the end of my A-level film course provided me with the chance to dedicate time into planning and directing my first short film (if we’re ignoring the many cringe skits I made as a child). My prompt which was ‘Following the development of a main character’, Is something I took personally from my lockdown experience by focusing on my character Sara, and her journey of taking on the hobby of skateboarding as I did a few months prior. Having my best friend who I spent the summer actually learning this new skill with act as my protagonist made this first film all the more meaningful to me. I encountered many unexpected challenges in the filming process, one including how I can show a fall without hurting my actor. These small hurdles have made me more appreciative of how challenging each aspect of filmmaking was. Whilst I am happy with the overall message and some shots in this film, I’m hopeful I can make improvements to my future productions.
